Summer in the Psalms#6 Teaching my Daughter Psalms 139

August 12, 2019 Leave a Comment

We live in a unique time for girls. I am looking at my sweet girl and she is about to turn from toddler, sweet elementary age, preteen, into a teenager! Stop it!  Now!

My heart hurts and I couldn’t be prouder all at the same time. And I say to God regularly, this wasn’t supposed to be so hard. And then I check myself and realize, I have it pretty ok.

It is tough to get ready to launch something you have poured your heart into.  To do this without a sigh or hesitation makes you wonder if you made the right choices, prayed hard enough, and guided strong.

But I have realized that is where my faith takes on an even deeper level and meaning.

As my daughter moves from my protective wing with each passing year,  I am constantly reminded of the presence of the Lord that I pray will be instilled in her every move.

Psalm 139 is a beautiful place for me to show her these precious truths.  This Psalm shows her (and all of us) that she is always

LOVED

VALUABLE

WATCHED OVER

PRECIOUS

**That even in the midst of horrible circumstances, God’s mercy will surpass them.

You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. (Psalm 139:8)

If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,” even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as day, for darkness is a as light to you. (Psalm 139:11-12)

**That even when she feels less than adequate (as all women face) there is someone who finds her amazing.

How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! If I would count them, they are more than the sand. I awake, and I am still with you. (Psalm 139:17-18)

**That when she wants to hide in shame or guilt, there is a hero who will go to no lengths to bring her back to Himself.

Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from our presence?  If I ascend to heaven, you are there!  If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!  If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me. (Psalm 139:7-10)

**And that she can take responsibility for her own beautiful walk with Jesus and He will heap her with beautiful blessings.

Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts!  And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. (Psalms 129:23-24)

We live in a culture that screams all kind of lies and falsehoods at women. Girls are struggling with depression and feelings of loneliness at alarming rates. They are seeing families struggle,  places they love and feel safe in are slowly falling apart.  They are looking, longing, and hoping for a future that is happy, secure, and bright.

As I continue to raise this precious girl, I want more than anything for her to know that Jesus holds her close and finds her more valuable and loved than even I and her dad do.  I want her remember that in this world there will be trouble, but Jesus has overcome!

I want her to live in full assurance of the hope that only Jesus can give, and I want her to remember that her life is worth every single breath of bringing glory to Him.

I know that the road ahead won’t be easy for her, and I don’t want her to never ever struggle.  Instead, I want her to rest in full assurance that God walks this path with her so that she can proclaim

I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.  Wonderful are your works; my souls knows it very well. (Psalm 139:14)

And with that I say, “You got this girl!  And more importantly God has got you!”

What about you?  Is there some sweet girl God has in your life that could use a word of encouragement today?  Let her know how loved she is by Jesus!  Those words could help her change the world!!

Love you!!

I remember my parents and grandparents telling us I remember my parents and grandparents telling us stories about the storms they endured. This is one of ours.

The 2021 historic ice storm of Valentines weekend where we watched massive trees explode like shrapnel.

Where power was knocked out for days and roads were closed as people attempted to recover from what looked like a war zone.

Where prayers were prayed for protection and comfort each night by the light of the fireplaces, candles, and lanterns.

Where we saw Jesus show up in the kindness of humanity with chainsaws, hot coffee, and generators.

Where we cried with each other behind COVID masks and we knew that we would rise again.

The place we saw God whisper His presence and remind us that we are better together. The place we were reminded that strength comes from hard and we will endure.

This is our history and our story to tell. #family #workingmom #faithoverfear #hope #familyiseverything
