Summer in the Psalms #7 Unpacking Psalm 146

August 25, 2019 Leave a Comment

If you are a mama, then your life might be changing right about now with kids gearing up for school. If you aren’t in the circle of school, or are already through it, you know that life still changes around you with school buses, schedules, weekend games at the park and the never ending school supply aisles at your favorite department store–since JULY!!.

Summer is ending. If you are a teacher you are crying and if you are a mom you want to do a party dance. Since I am both, I am constantly caught between the two!

But this summer has been an eye opener for me in a lot of ways and maybe it will resonate with you.

I just came off a really rough couple of years. Circumstances lent themselves to pain and frustration and I literally was ready to move to Australia….forever.

Psalm 146 has been one I constantly saw when flipping through my Bible. Partly because the page is worn, and mostly because God was trying to get my attention.

Today I actually stopped and took the time to read it and let the words seep deep into my heart and soul.

Blessed is he whose help is in the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord his God, who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, who keeps faith forever; who executes justice for the oppressed, who gives food to the hungry.

This is the God we have. The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob who cares not just about nature. But who individually cares about you and me. Everyday.

He cares if I am oppressed.  He cares if YOU are oppressed.

He cares if I am unmercifully treated.  He cares if YOU are unmercifully treated.

He cares if I am hungry.  He cares if YOU are hungry.

All three areas encompass our spiritual, emotional, and physical state.  He cares about each and every area of our lives.

All of these circumstances, can lead us to a place of wondering if God is really there.  If God is there, what will He do about these things? We doubt, we wonder, we search and we struggle with believing in a God who provides all the resources we could ever need.

Maybe we feel trapped, abandoned, forsaken, confused, frustrated or anxious.

The next few verses of this Psalms have these two beautiful words.  “The Lord”.  If I went no further and just let those sink in, it might be enough.

Our God-“THE LORD”-delights in doing miracles.

We all have something we are good at.  How great is it to know the one whose “thing” is performing miracles?!! It is “his thing” and it is GOOD!

Continue the Psalm with me…

The Lord sets the prisoners free;

The Lord opens the eyes of the blind.

The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down;

The Lord loves the righteous.

The Lord watches over the sojourners,

he upholds the widow and fatherless,

but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin.

The Lord will reign forever…

None of these things that God does, can be physically or emotionally done by another. God is the only one that can bring

freedom

hope

sight

peace

care

provision

In the middle of my crazy, and my panic, and my fear, and my desire to pack up my home and move far far away…

I can praise Him knowing He is mighty to save.  Maybe that is what the whole faith life is about.  Understanding that Jesus, “The Lord” fully has my back and that it doesn’t matter what I am going through, but instead focusing on the one who can fix what I am going through.  That is peace.

What about you, sister?  What are you facing that is making you feel crazy and anxious?  Read these words from Psalm 146 and claim them as His promises to you.  He delights in our praise.  Let him be “The Lord” for  you today!!    Love you!!

I remember my parents and grandparents telling us I remember my parents and grandparents telling us stories about the storms they endured. This is one of ours.

The 2021 historic ice storm of Valentines weekend where we watched massive trees explode like shrapnel.

Where power was knocked out for days and roads were closed as people attempted to recover from what looked like a war zone.

Where prayers were prayed for protection and comfort each night by the light of the fireplaces, candles, and lanterns.

Where we saw Jesus show up in the kindness of humanity with chainsaws, hot coffee, and generators.

Where we cried with each other behind COVID masks and we knew that we would rise again.

The place we saw God whisper His presence and remind us that we are better together. The place we were reminded that strength comes from hard and we will endure.

This is our history and our story to tell. #family #workingmom #faithoverfear #hope #familyiseverything
