Summer in Psalms #2 Unpacking Psalm 42

June 21, 2019 Leave a Comment

Not very often does my family get a chance to go hiking, although we do love it. This week we were able to get away for a day and explore a waterfall area nearby.

I was struck by some of the sights as I stood in a very undeveloped area. Everything I saw seemed to be reaching for the sky.

The vastness, the colors, and the quiet were completely incredible. It was as if the entire world in this one part of nature was standing and praising God.

In Psalm 42 the writer spends some honest time reflecting on his current state and ultimately comes to a positive conclusion about the Lord.

As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God.

My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.

When we face difficulties it can get “hot”. We look for relief from the pressure and burden that weigh heavy on us. God is the answer to this “panting”. He provides the refreshment next to the streams.

In these times of “hard” we can feel as if we have been left and as the Psalmist asks

*Where is God?

*How long will it be this way?

*Why have you forgotten me?

And ultimately

*Will it be this way forever?

But God, in His never ending love washes over our sad hearts and answers.

Deep calls to deep at the roar of your waterfalls; all your breakers and your waves have gone over me.

By day the Lord commands His steadfast love, at at night his song is with me, a prayer to the God of my life.

No matter what “situation” we find ourselves in

No matter how despairing our soul is

No matter what state of hopelessness we think is our new reality

God can pour His love down on us so richly, it is as a waterfall that gives us overwhelming hope, assurance, and peace.

Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me?

Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.

So pour your heart out to Him. You will look up again!

Love you!!
