Peace Pirates by Ashley Willis: A Book Review

June 9, 2020 Leave a Comment

I recently read and loved Peace Pirates: Conquering the Beliefs and Behaviors that Steal Your Treasure in Motherhood by Ashley Willis. This book does a beautiful job of combining Biblical teaching with practical applications for any women who finds themselves in the season of motherhood.

Ashley’s writing is like a good friend sitting with you over coffee. Her lighthearted approach to the struggles of being a mom encouraged me to examine my own beliefs and assumptions about motherhood.

As a mom, it is easy to fall into the beliefs that she addresses. Within her writing, Ashley looks at the challenges we face with Mommy Matrydom, Comparison Chaos, Clenching Control, and Excessive Expectations. She gently guides the reader through these four categories and teaches them to recongnize them in their own lives and make changes for the better.

Ashley speaks with a voice of experience, as a mom of four boys and one who is in ministry with her husband. She recognizes the struggles and joys of motherhood and talks openly about them. Throughout the book Ashley does a beautiful job of helping women see the truth that we are first and foremost Daughters of the King and that our worth as a mother is only found in Jesus Himself.

This book is a wonderful resource for moms of kids of all ages. It isn’t so much a book on parenting, but rather a way to examine my own heart’s approach to parenting. It provides ways to conquer misconceptions and the understand the importance of obeying God in striving to raise the children God has given.

This book will encourage, inspire, and teach you to embrace this motherhood journey with a renewed view of the incredible gift motherhood is. It will provide you with strength and hope that you are not alone in your struggles. As Ashley so aptly reminds us “…we must pursue, promote, and protect God’s peace in our hearts, and we must fight the peace pirates. He wil give us His perfect peace and open our eyes wide to His goodness-His treasure-in our lives”.

I remember my parents and grandparents telling us I remember my parents and grandparents telling us stories about the storms they endured. This is one of ours.

The 2021 historic ice storm of Valentines weekend where we watched massive trees explode like shrapnel.

Where power was knocked out for days and roads were closed as people attempted to recover from what looked like a war zone.

Where prayers were prayed for protection and comfort each night by the light of the fireplaces, candles, and lanterns.

Where we saw Jesus show up in the kindness of humanity with chainsaws, hot coffee, and generators.

Where we cried with each other behind COVID masks and we knew that we would rise again.

The place we saw God whisper His presence and remind us that we are better together. The place we were reminded that strength comes from hard and we will endure.

This is our history and our story to tell. #family #workingmom #faithoverfear #hope #familyiseverything
