Nestled in the pages of Psalm 92 are four verses that are encouragement to the heart of a woman of God. At first glance they don’t appear to apply much to our everyday lives. But, as Scripture often does, it provides a framework for us to dig deeper and discover applicable truths that impact us with the glory of the Creator.
The righteous flourish like the palm tree and grow like a cedar in Lebanon.
They are planted in the house of the Lord; they flourish in the courts of our God.
They still bear fruit in old age; they are ever full of sap and green,
to declare the Lord is upright: he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.
Psalm 92:12-15, ESV
What does is mean to be a godly woman?
There have been debates over time about what godly woman should look and act like. Woman are often put into categories of “thou shalt” and “thou shalt not”. Generational beliefs about what “should” be are the things young girls carry with them into marriages, parenting, and careers.
However, Scripture does not give a list of rules for women to follow to attain some sort of “god” status. Rather godly women are defined by their actions and heart. They flourish and they thrive. Psalm 92 points us to this truth.
Thriving as a Woman of God
A couple summers ago my family went south for vacation. Being a girl from the land of stately Douglas Fir trees and defined seasons, I was awed by the palm trees we saw reaching for the sky. The trees were massive and they were so tall, my tiny frame seemed to be the size of an ant next to them. After reading these verses they carried significance and I loved the symbolism used in Scripture.
Here are some fun facts I have discovered about palm trees.
**They can produce 3 different kinds of fruits. Coconut, date, and jelly ( which comes from the acacia berry)
**They grow is tropical climates the best. Lot’s of sunshine and favorable conditions
**Grow up to 30 feet tall.
Scripture makes it clear that those who are righteous or as the NLT says “those who are godly” will flourish.
Flourish means to grow or develop in a healthy vigorous way, to develop rapidly or successfully. To flourish and thrive, a palm tree needs to live in the right climate and be fed by the sun.
Just like the tree, we benefit from surrounding ourselves with believers and letting Jesus be our guiding light. As we follow after God and seek Him, we grow and we grow fast. The more we get to know about Jesus the more we want to know. We are still called to minister and love others with everything we have. We can only effectively do this if we are being fed by the Creator.
A Woman of God who is Strengthened
As we age the growing continues and we increase in the joy and love to offer. We are strengthened by Him. We understand what the Psalmist proclaims often
The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. (Psalm 18:1, ESV)
Have you ever been struck by an older woman and been inspired by her grace and quiet contentment at the feet of Jesus?
I have a few of these beauties in my life.
If I think they are absolutely beautiful, how much more must Jesus?
Somewhere in their past, they decided to live according to God’s standards, not their own or the world’s. This produced a fruitful life that draws others to His magnificence.
Living the Christian life does not equal perfection. It also does not guarantee a pain free, perfect existence. It merely means seeking after God and desiring to follow and serve Him. Reaching for the sky as we grow in the light of the Son of God is all He asks of us.
When we do this, we become like the palm tree and we can be confident we are women of God who will flourish fiercely!
